Contemporary Annex

On
by walters

Our client has rejected our proposal for a contemporary annex within the grounds of a Grade II listed building as they feel the design is too modern for their taste. We believe the planners would prefer this contrasting approach rather than a traditional pastiche design because the design would not detract from the main listed building but would highlight the fact that it is a new addition to the site. Architecture is a compromise between designer, planner and client and the client is always right. So, it’s back to the drawing board until we are all happy with the results.

Apartment above an Existing Village Shop.

Walters Architects have amended the initial designs for a new contemporary apartment above an existing shop in a small village in Leicestershire. The scheme will incorporate sustainable technologies and modern materials whilst evolving through comment from the Local Authority.

A new hero emerges.

A new hero emerges.

Architects are notoriously bad at marketing and I have been told in the past that some more traditional practices even considered it vulgar.

I don’t totally understand a profession which is one of the first to suffer in a recession and who give away so much fee work in the preliminary stages of an appointment (sometimes only to be disappointed by eventually loosing the commission without any payment at all) not wanting to develop their business through more prospective leads. After all isn’t sales a numbers game?

However, I have noticed in one particular house builder magazine, practices taking out full page advertising. This is great. It introduces people to practices that may not have reached superstar status (see Foster, Rogers, Hadid etc) but are still brilliant companies able to take on everyday commissions.

The practice this month that caught my eye is Gregory Phillips Architects. They undertake mainly domestic high end commissions and include interior design as part of their services. This is exactly where I would like Walters Architects to be, great designs for ambitious clients.
