We met with one of our clients last night to discuss the sustainable technologies he wanted to incorporate into his new build home. We all arrived at the same conclusion. It will be Ground Source Heat Pumps to heat the house and provide the hot water with possibly some solar power to run the pump. Fortunately our client has 300 acres in which to house the under ground pipes so capacity shouldn’t be an issue. Can’t wait to get started on this site. We would like to be involved with more sustainable design.
Walters Architects had a very interesting conversation with an energy consultant yesterday about all sorts of technologies (ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, Bio Mass boilers etc.) but the one thing we discussed and with which we were most impressed was solar. The technology has moved on an enormous amount since we last looked at it. We just need to convince our clients to incorporate it more. It is clever stuff people.
Good news. Walters Architects have just secured planning permission for a garage conversion into an annex. The best thing about the project is the clients willingness to explore new materials and ideas. We are taking a very ordinary domestic garage and turning into a sustainable one bedroom annex for the family parents. The new insulation will be hung externally and the outer face will be finished with recycled timber pallets. We are all very excited and can’t wait to see the end results.
Channel 4 have a great new program called ‘Damned Designs’ which follows the progress of contentious and appealed planning decisions. The program is aired on Mondays at 8.00pm and I missed last nights show but it will ‘Catch Up’. Last week it featured the urban myth (actually fact as it turns out) about the chap who built a house behind straw bails and the chap who installed a shark in his roof. The farmer needs to demolish the house whilst the shark can stay. Nothing stranger than the planning system. Call Walters Architects if you are struggling with anything like the issued featured on the show.
Did anyone see last nights C4 program about the house Grayson Perry built for Julie? It was a master class in Art & Design. I love Grayson (not sure about all of his work though) and whilst I thought it was going to be another attack on the planning system it was refreshing to see a piece of art being produced in the name of architecture. Well done Grayson, keep pushing the conventional.
I bumped into an old friend in the street yesterday who asked ‘Do you obtain planning permission, for new houses on green field sites’. He went on to say ‘I know you design buildings but I wasn’t sure if you sought planning permission.’ I was surprised to say the least. What is it some people think we do, just design buildings that can’t be built? YES, we obtain planning permission for our clients. He said he’d call us in the week.
